We would think that the fact that none of the Web's most popular sites include scrolling Java text on their home pages would be a pretty good indicator that this cliche is a distraction. Yet sites like this still used this feature, which adds no value to the site. Clipart graphics give an amateurish impression of the site, and content was frequently too many clicks away. For example, the tax page under "Firm Brochure" includes a link to attorney profiles, and that page includes the links to the actual profiles. A better approach would be to include links the attorneys by name on the tax page. The text-based and graphics-based navigation elements included different elements, which is non-intuitive. And the "Recruiting" section was frames-based, unlike the rest of the site. A page of links to other Web sites was included, but it hadn't been updated in six months, which is why we recommend simply linking to FindLaw. A search engine was included, but its output included only the found pages' titles. And without bookmark-friendly titles, its difficult to determine which pages are on point. Conspicuously absent was any content that would compel users to return.
