Ordinarily, we urge firms to adopt a functional approach to their web site: recognizing that many firms' resources are limited when it comes to projects like web sites, we recommend that the majority of the resources are spent on the content. After all - good content with an average presentation will still impress. The other way around rarely is anything to get excited about. Yet Cooley Godward's site is a perfect example of how the technology can be used to great effect. Not only are numerous technical enhancements present throughout the site - they actually improve the site dramatically by making it easier to use, simpler to navigate, and more accessible to the casual browser. For example: the site is frames-based, but one click turns frames "off". You can alternate between the two - an excellent example of the firm paying attention to what the user wants, not what the firm wants to give them. The site is database-driven (which is generally easier to administer but makes bookmarking next to impossible) - for which they provide an easy workaround that allows users to bookmark pages they're interested in. Newsletters could be more current, but some exist from this year. A site-wide search engine is precise, and the results are presented in an easy-to-use fashion. This is an outstanding site, and should serve as an example to other firms looking to design an easy-to-use site.
